Health and Human Services

An aging society and rapidly advancing technologies in the health care industry create a great demand for trained employees in a variety of health care venues. The Health Services pathway at Montgomery High School and the Biotechnology pathway at Piner High School are for both university and career-bound students interested in the health care industry. Students completing either pathway will have a solid foundation of medical terminology that will give them an advantage when seeking employment immediately after high school or when continuing their training in the health care field.

Health Services pathway students investigate job opportunities in nine health care service areas: dental, nursing, preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, support, biotechnology, medical office and health care information. Coursework in ROP Health Occupations and Sports Medicine involves rigorous academic work, lab experience and field visits. A well-developed internship program that allows students to extend their learning beyond the classroom is available through our industry partners at Kaiser and Memorial Hospitals.

Piner High School offers a highly interactive program in Biotechnology and Health Services.  The curriculum has been approved by the University of California system for a-g elective credit meeting college entrance requirements.  Topics such as environmental biotechnology, health and wellness, pharmacology, genetic engineering, ecology and local agriculture, and alternative energy are covered.  First-year students take a unit in CPR and first-aid, which culminates with Red Cross certification.  Throughout the program there are frequent field trips, job shadow opportunities and real-world laboratory activities.

Montgomery High School also offers a course in Public Safety.  The course provides in-depth information about careers in police, fire and emergency medical services  and serves as an introductory course to Health Services.  Students will participate in case studies and scenarios to learn communication, team work, critical thinking, problem-solving and leadership skills. The program will be linked directly to the Public Safety Training Program at SRJC.

Translation Services at Santa Rosa High School is designed to help students achieve proficiency in communicating in more than one language.  Many governmental and non-profit agencies desire or require certain positions to have bilingual staff.  Bilingual applicants are often given preference over other job candidates and can earn extra pay for their skills. Translation Services skills are used in many industry sectors such as Business, Construction, Hospitality and Health Services.

The Child Development pathway is designed to help students prepare for careers with children.  With a growing need for day care providers and pre-school teachers, students completing this pathway will enter the workforce with a solid foundation of educational theory and practical experience.  Students can earn two certifications in this pathway giving them an advantage in the job market.  The certifications are in CPR and Child Development Assistant Permit or Certified Pre-School Teacher’s Assistant.
